DJing & DJ Products

A DJ or DJing is short for a Disc Jockey. A DJ Mixer is different to a studio audio mixing console. The DJ mixer can redirect a Cue signal, to headphones and the Crossfader. Which allows for two sources to be heard at once. DJ mixers are used to create DJ mixes for Clubs Radio and Scratching.

A DJ mixer has between two and six stereo channels for connecting and mixing audio sources. Each channel usually has a Phono Input with RIAA EQ curve short for Recording Industry Associate of America. For vinyl turntables to boost the high frequencies and kill the bass frequency. Which converts the vinyl audio back to the original sound.

And line level inputs for sources for CD/MP3 players. Controls for channels are arranged in vertical column Channel Strips, with a switch or a knob selector between the inputs.

• Input selector is a Gain or Trim control, for signal levels between channels.

• A equalizer section knobs for the Low, Mid and High frequency ranges.

• More controls for a balance/pan knob, built-in sound effects and aux-sends for external effects units.

• A cue switch sending the signal to the headphones, for a DJ preview and Beatmatch, BPM/Beats Per Minute or Tempo Sync without sending it to the master output.

The channel strip ends with a fader which sets the channel's signal volume in the final mix.

Microphone inputs are on most DJ mixers for MCs Masters of Ceremonies. These have some or no EQ controls on them, some with jack or XLR inputs.

Most DJ mixers feature peak meters to match levels between channels and monitor the signal for clipping. Usually there are peak meters for master mix and cued mix.

A DJ mixer has a headphone jack plugs and a headphone volume control. Headphones are normally used to monitor a Split Cue where cued channels are sent to the left headphone channel and master mix to the right, or a way to select both at once.

Sometimes there are two or more outputs for a master mix signal, to an amplifier or mixer for a PA Public Address System. A loudspeaker in the DJ booth for monitoring the mix, to a tape recorder or a computer for recording. One volume control for all outputs or separate controls for each outputs. Sometimes a recording output may not have a volume control.
